If you’ve always been more sweet than salty, you’ll love this cake! Now you can have cake for lunch…. Bundt cake! It’s essentially a pie, or rather a giant version of a traditional sandwich. Instead of a cake you have layers of rye bread, and instead of a sweet glaze you have a creamy and tasty filling. In fact, there are even vegan toppings these days!

This sandwich cake is of Swedish origin and known by several names: Smårgastrata in Sweden, Voileivort in Estonia, Voilejpakakku in Finland and Brauotert in Iceland. The Sandwich Pie is always served cold, sliced and baked like a pie.

How many kinds of this bundt cake are there?

Toppings come in a variety of flavors, but most contain eggs and mayonnaise. The other ingredients are liver pate, olive tapenade, cooked shrimp, chopped ham, caviar, tomato, cucumber, cheese and of course smoked salmon. It can be made in different forms. Some people prefer the round shape, but square and rectangular shapes are still the most popular. Sandwich pies can be decorated beautifully, so be creative. Use salmon-colored roses to create height on the cake, or even a light layer of peas scattered throughout the layers so that a layer of greenery appears between them.

Notes

This sandwich cake is best eaten the day you make it. It is not suitable for freezing.

Be creative with your decorations. You can also use :

  • Radish, thinly sliced
  • carrots, cut and packaged
  • chopped onion
  • Pea shoots
  • Brussels sprouts

Make your sandwich more colorful by adding beets or peas to the cream cheese mixture. Mix the cooked vegetables with the cream cheese in a food processor to make a smooth, colorful spread.

Since the sandwich cake is quite rich, prefer lighter breads (rye is the best option).

You can make a sandwich cake in 24 hours. Store the cake in the refrigerator and decorate just before serving.
